Lessonery explains how to study: how to learn material so it stays, take useful notes, prepare for exams, read and write for school or university, and manage study time. It is written for students at any level and for anyone learning something on their own.

What we cover

  • Study methods — retrieval practice, spaced repetition and other methods, with what the studies behind them found.
  • Note-taking — the main note-taking methods with examples, and how to use notes after class.
  • Exam preparation — revision plans, practice tests and how to handle different question types.
  • Reading and writing — reading textbooks and papers, summarizing, and planning and revising essays.
  • Focus and time — planning study time, procrastination, breaks and distraction.

Who writes it

Lessonery is an independent publication. The articles are researched and written by the Lessonery editorial team. We are writers and researchers, not teachers, psychologists or doctors, so we don't ask you to take our word for anything: every guide shows where its claims come from.

How we research and write

  • Published research first. Claims about what works are checked against the studies themselves: peer-reviewed papers, research reviews, and practice guides from education research bodies. University learning-center pages are used for practical steps.
  • What the study did, not just the headline. Where it matters we say who was tested, on what material and after how long, because a result with college students learning word lists may not carry over to every subject.
  • Honest about limits. When the evidence is mixed, small or disputed, we say so. Popular ideas that research does not support are described as such.
  • No invented experience. We don't claim to have tested methods on students ourselves, and we don't make up statistics, quotes or success stories.
  • Updates and corrections. When new research changes the picture, or a reader points out a mistake, we update the article and show the "Updated" date.

What this site is not

The guides are general educational information. They are not medical, psychological or professional advice, and no method guarantees a grade. If stress, anxiety, sleep or attention problems are getting in the way of your studies, a doctor, counselor or your school's support service is the right place to go. See our Disclaimer.

Lessonery is not affiliated with any university, research group, testing organization or app named on the site. Their names are used only to identify their work.
