Independence Day Paragraph : Independence means freedom from domination of others. Bangladesh declared its independence on 26 March 1971. So, 26 March is our Independence Day and it is the biggest state festival of Bangladesh. Bangladesh had to undergo a bloody war for her independence from Pakistan. Since the end of the British rule, Bangladesh was under the domination of Pakistan. From the very beginning, the Pakistani oppressive rulers exploited the Bangalees economically, socially and politically. For this, the Bangalees had to fight for independence, which started on March 26, 1971 and continued for nine months. People from all walks of life joined the war. They fought face to face against the Pakistani occupation force.

About 3 million people sacrificed their lives in the war. Every year, we observe our Independence Day in a befitting manner. It is a public holiday. The day begins with 31 gunshots. Early in the morning, the President and the Prime Minister on behalf of the nation place floral wreaths at the National Mausoleum at Savar. Then other leaders, political parties, diplomats, social and cultural organizations, educational institutions, freedom fighters and people from all walks of life pay homage to the martyrs. Meetings, seminars, cultural programmes etc. are arranged throughout the country upholding the significance of the day. Radio and television channels also broadcast special programmes on the significance of the day. In the evening, all major public buildings are illuminated with colourful lights. The day is very significant for us. On this day, we promise to defend the sovereignty of our motherland and fight against injustice, tyranny, and falsehood.

স্বাধীনতা হলো অন্যের অধীন থেকে মুক্তি/স্বাধীন। ১৯৭১ সালের ২৬ মার্চ বাংলাদেশ তার স্বাধীনতা ঘোষণা করে। তাই, ২৬ মার্চ আমাদের স্বাধীনতা দিবস এবং এটি বাংলাদেশের বৃহত্তর রাষ্ট্রীয় উৎসব। এক রক্তক্ষয়ী যুদ্ধের মধ্য দিয়ে বাংলাদেশকে পাকিস্তান থেকে তার স্বাধীনতা অর্জন করতে হয়। ব্রিটিশ শাসনামলের পর বাংলাদেশ পাকিস্তানের অধীনে ছিল। শুরু থেকেই, পাকিস্তানী অত্যাচারী শাসকগণ অর্থনৈতিক, সামাজিক ও রাজনৈতিকভাবে বাঙ্গালিদের শোষণ করে আসছিল। এই কারণে বাঙালিদের স্বাধীনতার জন্য যুদ্ধ করতে হয় যেটি ১৯৭১ সালের ২৬ মার্চ শুরু হয়ে নয় মাস অব্যাহত থাকে। সকল শ্রেণীর মানুষ এই যুদ্ধে অংশ গ্রহণ করেন। তারা পাকিস্তানি সেনাবাহিনীর বিরুদ্ধে মুখোমুখি যুদ্ধ করে।

প্রায় ত্রিশ লক্ষ মানুষ যুদ্ধে তাদের জীবন উৎসর্গ করেন। প্রতি বছর আমরা আমাদের স্বাধীনতা দিবস যথাযথ ভাবগাম্ভীর্য্যের সাথে পালন করি। দিনটি সরকারি ছুটির দিন। ৩১ বার তোপধ্বনির মাধ্যমে দিনটি শুরু হয়। খুব ভোরে রাষ্ট্রপতি এবং প্রধানমন্ত্রী সাভারে জাতীয় স্মৃতিসৌধে পুরো জাতির পক্ষে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করেন। এরপর অন্যান্য নেতা-কর্মীরা, রাজনৈতিক দল, কূটনীতিবৃন্দ, সামাজিক এবং সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠনগুলো, শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো, মুক্তিযোদ্ধাগণ এবং সর্বস্তরের মানুষেরা শহীদদের প্রতি সম্মান প্রদান করেন। দিনটির তাৎপর্য তুলে ধরার জন্য দেশব্যাপী সভা, আলোচনা সভা, সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান ইত্যাদির আয়োজন করা হয়। দিনটির পুরুত্ব নিয়ে রেডিও ও টেলিভিশন চ্যানেলগুলোতে বিশেষ অনুষ্ঠান সম্প্রচার করা হয়। সন্ধ্যায় প্রধান প্রধান সরকারি ভবনগুলো রঙ্গিন বাতি দ্বারা আলোকসজ্জিত করা হয়। দিনটি আমাদের জন্য খুবই তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ। এই দিনে আমরা মাতৃভূমির সার্বভৌমত্ব রক্ষার্থে এবং অবিচার, স্বৈরশাসন ও মিথ্যাচারের বিরুদ্ধে লড়াই করার শপথ গ্রহণ করি।
